How do I redeem a gift card?

Whether you received a gift card from someone or got one for yourself, you need a Microsoft account to redeem it. If you don’t already have one, visit the Microsoft account How-To page to learn more.

Once you have an active Microsoft account, you can redeem a gift card or code to your account in any of the following ways:

Redeem a gift card from someone else

When you receive a digital gift card from someone, simply follow the instructions in the email you received.

Xbox One:

Before you start, make sure your console is connected to the internet and the Microsoft account you want to use is signed in.

  1. Say "Xbox, use a code".
  2. Follow the instructions on-screen to redeem the code from your gift card.

  1. Select "Xbox Store" > "Browse Games" > "Use a Code".
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen to redeem the code from your gift card.
Xbox 360:

Before you start, make sure your console is connected to the internet and the Microsoft account you want to use is signed in.

  1. Press the Guide button on the controller.
  2. Select "Games and Apps" > "Redeem Code".
  3. Enter the gift card code and select "Done"
  4. When prompted, select "Yes" to confirm.
Xbox.com:
  1. Sign in to Redeem code with your Microsoft account.
  2. Select "Redeem", enter your gift card code, then click "Confirm".
  3. Start shopping.
Windows 8.1 tablet or PC:
  1. On the Start screen, select "Store".
  2. Swipe from the top or right-click.
  3. Select "Your account".
  4. Enter your gift card code and select "Redeem".
  5. Start shopping.
Windows Phone 8 or later:
  1. Launch the Wallet app from the app list.
  2. Select the "+" button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Enter your gift card code and tap "Next".
  4. Go to Store and start shopping.
Web browser:
  1. Sign in to Microsoft account - Billing.
  2. Select "Payment options" > "Microsoft account" > "Redeem Card".
  3. Enter your gift card code and select "Next".
  4. Go to a participating Microsoft online store and start shopping.

Once you redeem your gift card code, the entire value of the card will be transferred to your Microsoft account. You can then use the money in your account to purchase apps, games, music, videos, and other digital content at Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox stores.

Please note that the card or code may provide additional instructions on redemption, and may be subject to additional terms and conditions as provided with the card or code.

You can manage your account by visiting https://commerce.microsoft.com where you can view your balance, check when any part of your balance expires, or review your purchase history.

NOTE: You can only redeem gift cards to personal accounts. If you only have business or corporate accounts then you must create a personal account before you can redeem a gift card or code. Read more about account types.

  • You can only redeem gift cards in the currency that they were purchased with. It is not recommended to send gift cards to countries that use other currencies.
  • Digital gift cards can only be used to purchase digital content like games, apps, music, and videos from Microsoft online stores like the Windows Store, Windows Phone Store, and Xbox stores. You cannot use digital gift cards to purchase physical goods or items from Microsoft Store retail locations or microsoftstore.com.
